At Red Rock Canyon School we realize the importance of sports for many of our students. We have enthusiastic rosters for each of the sports we are involved in. Each summer the boys show a great interest in the wrestling and football camps that we attend. In addition to the camps and seasons we play, students are encouraged to play our recreational sports such as bowling, tennis, and golf.
We are involved in several different municipal athletic leagues including the men's and women's National Softball Association. Softball is by far our most popular sport.
In the fall, we play 7-on-7 in the NFL's flag football league. The boys always do well in this league. Our boys show that a little dedication, discipline, and endurance goes a long way when it comes to this football league. Communication and teamwork are the foundations of success when we play which ties into our goals in treatment of cooperation and conflict resolution.
Due to our desert climate and mild winters our students are also able to enjoy golf and tennis year round. We are not competitively involved in leagues with these individual sports, so the students are improve and participate at their own pace.
With each activity we are able to find teaching opportunities with our students. For example, when a student is struggling with the golf swing we can help guide them to improve their swing but also tie that process into how the face life. To continue with the golf swing analogy we teach students that their "grip it and rip it" lifestyle prior to treatment has gotten them into trouble and damaged relationships or "the rough". We try to show through our athletic program that if they take the time to find the combination of the right stance and right swing they will hit the ball straighter. Such as life if they will take time to openly communicate, utilize patience and rely on teamwork we can improve our happiness.
There are so many reasons why sports are supported at Red Rock Canyon School. We believe that through sports our students can not only learn the value of playing by the rules, they can also learn the value of teamwork. They learn to take responsibility for themselves as their teammates are depending on them. This teaches the value of care and concern which is central to our Positive Peer environment.
