If you missed our last Family Weekend (Jun. 5-7), then you missed a wave of skill-building workshops, networking, food and entertainment and cut-out decor inspired by some cool-looking penguins on surfboards. If you get a chance, I think our resident art teacher, Nanci and a few of her trusted students-who were the backbone and brains behind this production-would love to get your comments via email (RRRTC.com). The next Family Weekend is scheduled for Sept.ll-13th, and, according to "reliable sources," the theme, will be a 50's "sock hop." Be there or be square.
St. George's summer has once again arrived ahead oftime. The past few days have been in the low 100's and it's only going to go higher next week. What this means for our mountain biking program is more early morning get-away's for the riders. Presently we only have one youth who thinks biking in any kind of weather is better than veggin' next to an AC when there's nothing else to do. We hope that his spirit proves contagious, and that a few more of his peers will "catch his wheel" and learn to deny themselves the urge to "coast to a stop" when the road turns uphill
... regardless if they're on a bicycle or not. By the way, if you're a cycling fan, what's your reaction to the TdF so far? Shoot me an email and let me know what you think.
Red Rock has a new Unit Leader on Copper. His name is Brian King and we wish him well in his new residential position. Speaking of the Copper Unit~ one of our Transition students is now scheduled for graduation on the 23rd of this month. Have you ever wondered about what happens to those of our students who graduate from RRCS? In this young man's case, he intends to finish high school back in his hometown in Ohio and then enroll in a nearby university with the intention of becoming a psychol()gist. Naturally, not all of our graduates know what they want to do with their lives by the time they're ready to go home. But what they do know is what NOT to do with their lives ... ever again. Indeed, if they gained nothing else while here at Red Rock, that rising awareness alone easily represents the biggest return on everyone's investment, especially their own.
Hope you found time for yourself on the 4th to reflect on how blessed we are to live in a land where freedom is more of a way of life than not, and to also honor those who have fought and died to keep it that way over the years. If somehow you missed the true spirit of Independence Day for all of its commercial distractions, then may we suggest you rent a DVD movie titled "Taking Chance," and experience the occasion on an entirely different level. You'll be thankful you did.
Until next time,
Barry
