October: 4th deadliest month since war began

by Shavonna Raso

Last month there was a total of 101 Americans killed over in Iraq, making it the 4th deadliest month since the war began. Before that, the monthly tolls were 107 in the month of January 2005, 135 in April 2004, and 137 in November 2004. As you can see, since the conflict began in March 2003 there has been a slight variation in death tolls.

A random survey of the Red Rock students says that more than 3/4 of them want our troops to come home. There was a comment stating, "It’s not our war to fight." It promoted lots of discussion and brought lots of opinions. For some people this subject really hit close to home. "Having my son-in-law over there is hard. It proves just how real this thing actually is. Those vicious people are controlling all the helpless ones. It made it even harder knowing we lost a friend to the April death toll. But knowing that we are over there giving up so much of us to help this nation grow to be independent is amazing.", stated Nanci S. a member of the coral unit staff.

With good, comes bad. Just two days after St. Louis won the world series they were ranked the most dangerous city in the United States. Violent crime surged nearly 20% since 2004. "It’s just sad the way the city is," resident Sam Dawson explains, "on the news you hear of killings and that someone has been shot". It came as no surprise to the residents of St. Louis since the city has been on the top 10 list for years. The historical Arc, one a symbol of historical pride, now represents the ups and downs of the dismal rollercoaster of St. Louis.
